Although I never actually researched it, being a millennial I always had a hunch that a happier team makes a more functional team. Makes sense, right? Perhaps, but it could also make sense that investing in employee fun could ultimately be a waste of money. I decided to finally look into this theory.

In an article written by Mashable, they report that team outings lead to stronger relationships between coworkers and a higher productivity due to employee happiness. They claim that employees see outings as a break from an everyday work environment, and the break allows them to come back fresh, relaxed and thus more creative. It can also be a way for newer employees to immerse themselves in a company culture and socialize with their teammates. Meanwhile, longer standing employees get the opportunity to bond with their team members outside of the office, cultivating a stronger trust for one another. Many companies Mashable looked into who are big on company outings stated that if a team genuinely likes each other, the company is more likely to succeed.

SUCCESSFUL COMPANIES EQUALS EMPLOYEE ENGAGEMENT

So, do work relationships really foster high employee engagement? The Entrepreneur online magazine seems to think so. They believe one of the top overlooked factors to increase employee engagement is co-worker relationships. They find that in order to have a thriving culture, employees must have positive relationships in the workplace. According to the article, there are four main ways to do this: encourage workplace friendships, celebrate milestones together, create meaningful events to celebrate said milestones and acknowledge employees

So, we had to put these theories to the test. As a small office, we’re constantly looking for ways to mingle in a casual, non-work environment. In doing so, our teams and company as a whole have become stronger, and thus easier to work harmoniously.
