At Winsper, we are firm believers in keeping the small, independent businesses in our communities alive and well. So in honor of Indie Retailer Month (July), we’ve decided to highlight a few of our favorites. When we’re not plugging away in Downtown Crossing, you can catch us at some of these awesome spots in our hometowns.

Modelo
Modelo
Everett, MA

This local Brazilian bakery, Modelo is within one block from our apartment which is truly dangerous since they have delicious, homemade, and authentic Brazilian-style sweets and pastries. Every morning, you can get their fresh baked breakfast bread. One of my favorite delicacies is their coconut cake with grapes and of course, their passion fruit mousse. My husband prefers "x/tudo" sandwich, it cannot get more Brazilian than that!!

Pemberton Farms
Pemberton Farms
Cambridge, MA

Pemberton Farms is a few blocks away from my parents’ house in Cambridge, so I’ve been going to this market since I was a child with my parents and also by myself, now that I’m older-- although now I have to drive about 15 minutes to get there. This is my favorite place to get dog toys & treats, beer & wine, prepared foods, plants and things for my garden stuff and specialty foods. Although it is more expensive than several other markets in my ‘hood, I like going here because it is family-owned and they know my family and I well, and each employee is a specialist in every area of the market (Tonya is my go-to for all dogrelated questions). I also love going here because I don’t have to read labels. They only source locally, or specialty brands that are natural, healthy and sustainably produced, so I know that anything I purchase there will leave me feeling that although I just spent a ton of money, it was worth the price to support local or healthy.

Worldly Pets
Worldly Pets
Marblehead, MA

We love Worldly Pets, our local specialty pet store, for many reasons. Firstly, they carry special food for dogs with allergies that you can’t get at a big box store like Petco or Petsmart. The owner is a true animal lover and very knowledgeable. Her expertise has saved us countless visits to the vet and hundreds of dollars. The staff curates the store beautifully and have adorable toys and treats. They even set aside the new XXL bandanas for our beast, Corduroy who always like to be fashionable. It's an added bonus that it's blocks from my house so we can pick up a treat at the end of a long walk.

Highland Kitchen
Highland Kitchen
Somerville, MA

Highland Kitchen is an awesome, family-owned restaurant that my husband and I have frequent. They have great dinner service featuring comfort food and a live music brunch every weekend. When they don’t have bands, they have an old jukebox that sets the mood. Definitely check it out if you find yourself in Somerville area.

Playful Paws
Playful Paws
Malden, MA

Our family loves the doggie daycare, Playful Paws. It is a small local facility that provides the best care for our two dogs. The staff at the daycare are the most sweet and caring people - our dogs are always very excited about going there. The Playful Paws staff even took the time to accommodate and socialize our dog, Chelsea, who is very slow to warm up to new people. Now she is having the best time and all of the staff are her favorite people in the world. We are very thankful about the quality of care this local business provides!

Brookline Booksmith
Brookline Booksmith
Brookline, MA

Ahh the Booksmith. You are greeted with that unmistakable smell of thousands of books with countless pages ready to be flipped through and devoured. From national bestsellers to local authors, there is a volume for everyone. A secondhand basement also provides the thrill of a treasure hunt as you scour through books from the ages. There’s also a gift section with some unique pickings and more local offerings. On top of all of its amazing offerings, the Booksmith is one of America’s last (and highly successful) independent book dealers. This creates a strong community around the Booksmith. Each purchase is given a Booksmith bookmark, a flag that earns you a nod as you pass others in your tribe. That is something I can never get through the big box stores.

Ashmont Cycles
Ashmont Cycles
Dorchester, MA

Ashmont Cycles at Peabody Square is just a block from my house which is awesome because it means I don't have to put my bike in the car whenever it needs to get fixed. This local shop sells and repairs high-end bicycles and offers tune-ups. Their quick service keeps me and my favorite bike happy and they're very knowledgeable about anything "cycling."

Long Trail Brewery
Long Trail Brewery
Bridgewater Corners, VT

The Long Trail Brewery is a brewery and pub with the interior reminding Hofbräuhaus in Munchen and outdoor seating overlooking Ottauquechee River. You can take a peek at the brewery operations, get the freshly brewed beer that is not available anywhere else, and have a nice lunch prepared with the local Vermont ingredients. They are always innovative with their ales, lagers, stouts, and porters. And of course they are very generous with giving back to the community by supporting bike rides and other charity events. Best place to have refreshing beer with friends!

Ray’s Seafood
Ray’s Seafood
Rye, NH

There’s something about hazy afternoons that make the drinks taste better. When I’m leaving Hampton’s North Beach after a day of sun and sand and the wind from Route 1A blows past your face on the winding road up to Ray’s Seafood I feel like all’s right in the world. This little shack is always the pot of gold at the end of the rainbow for me, a small privatelyowned purveyor of incredibly fresh (caught that day I bet) seafood and tasty strong drinks. I always have a saying, and that’s if you can get it anywhere, from a chain or a big corporate location, it’s just not going to be as good. If the tables are from the seventies, the signs battered by salt air and the menus on paper placemats, chances are you’re in for one hell of a good plate of seafood. I have dreams about the clam rolls. Seriously, I dream about them. Then I have to go to the beach, lying to myself that the real reason I’m on the sand is to get sun and relax but really I’m just biding my time until the sun gets a little lower and I grab a parking spot at Ray’s. Many thanks to Ray’s for giving me the barometer from which all other seafood is judged!

The Raven’s Nest
The Raven’s Nest
Walpole, MA

The Raven's Nest is my neighborhood Irish Pub. Great food, great atmosphere and of course, the best Black & Tan beers in town! The proprietors are also huge New England Patriots fans and made the news when they temporarily renamed their spot “The Patriot’s Nest” when the Baltiomre Ravens played the Patriots to qualify for the Superbowl.
